Toledo, Spain

May 2018

Toledo is the quintessential European town that everyone believes all of Europe looks like.  It is considered the most representative of Spanish culture, and its historic centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986.

But it’s so much more than that.  The history of this little town completely blew me away.   Named  “the City of the Three Culture”, simultaneously being the home of Christians, Jews and Muslims, evidence of which is still present, even down to the tiles paving the streets.  From the 9th to the 16th centuries, Toledo was the centre of the La Conviencia, the co-exsistence of these three cultures, where ideas and skills were shared.  Jewish synagogues were build by Islamic architects in a medieval Christian kingdom.
