Saint Anthony Church, or Curtea Veche Church, is a Roman Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, one of the earliest monks and desert fathers of the Christian tradition. It was built by Prince Mircea Ciobanul (1545-1552, 1558-1559) around 1559, making it the oldest church in Bucharest.
It is the only church that existed within Curtea Veche, the court of the Princes of Wallachia (medieval Romania).
Palace of Deposits and Consignments (CEC) was built from 1897-1900 by orders of King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth II of England. It is the headquarters of the oldest bank in Romania, and a famous icon in Budapest.
The Church of Stavropoleos Monastery was built in 1724 by Ioannikios Stratonikeas, a Greek businessman and owner of an inn. To thank God for his inn, he decided to build the church. He built it within the precinct of his inn, and economically sustained it with the income from the inn. Later he became a monk, and then an abbot in a monastery in the Bulgarian city of Straveopoleos. In 1726, Stratinikeas was elected the metropolitan bishop, and after which, the monastery was known as Stravropoleos Monastery.
Most of the inn and the monastery were demolished at the end of the 19th century, and the church suffered great damage from earthquakes. What remained was restored in the 20th century, including a library with 8000 books from the 18th century.
The New "Saint George" Church was built in 1706 on the foundation of a 15th century church. In 1671, the foreign minister of the Ottoman Empire ordered that the entire complex be rebuilt. In 1705, the Old Church was demolished, and built a new one, one more lavish and with marble floors and pillars. It included an inn with 200 rooms, used for lodging, a kitchen, a refectory, a chapel and even a printing press.
Several fires and earthquakes in the 18th and 19th centuries damaged a large part of the original structure. In was restored in the 1850s.
