Trafalgar Square is a public square constructed in 1840, commemorating the British victory of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), against France and Spain.  The column in the center of the square is called Nelson’s column, and was added to honor Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was responsible for Britain’s victory.

The square has been used for community gatherings and political demonstrations, including Bloody Sunday (unemployment protects in 1887), the Aldermaston March (anti-nuclear weapons demonstrations in the 1950s and 1960s), anti-war protests, and campaigns against climate change.  While there in November, the square held a Christmas market, where you could enjoy mulled wine while perusing the numerous stalls. . 

Pickering Place is an 18th century public square; it is the smallest in England, but has a shady past.  Tucked behind two 16th century shops, its seclusion was the reason for it notorious gambling dens, bear baiting and duels. 

It was also the home to the of the Embassy of the Republic of Texas, in the years when Texas was an independent country before joining the USA in 1845.

Tower Bridge is a movable, drawbridge built in 1894.  When it was built, it was the largest and most sophisticated bascule (French for seesaw) bridge ever completed.  It operates via hydraulics, using steam to power the enormous pumping engines.

 The walkways were originally designed to allow pedestrians to cross even while the bridge was raised, but they became hangouts for prostitutes and thieves and so were closed from 1909 to 1982.
